The age of steam really turned up the ante on mechanical power that could be directed to any task. Unlike wind, or even water, steam was on demand and “controllable”. Our modern day vehicle engines are the air-pumps that derive very closely from steam.

But often the power needs to be be geared up or down, and transmissions are the mechanical genious that handles that.

The next two pictures are from bycicle parts, just ad demostration on how far one can take an idea.

First, the Rohloff 14 gear internal gear hub. One look and you will be amazed at the sheer audacity of this component, and shocked by its quality and price.

And then the rather curious, and no less impressive NuVinci Continuously-Variable Bicycle Hub.

Click on the pictures, follow the links. This is very interesting bits of technology.

First Toronto bike injury happened this morning. Car, rather indecisive, lack of space and the Streetcar tracks in a corner… Front tyre bites into the track, rail redirects motion, rear right panier sends out tail with the small ballance differential. Left foot down to ride it out … left pedal continues motion and “bites” left leg just under the knee. Ouch.

Looks worse then it feels. Polysporin & band-aids to the rescue.

May 24 Edition!

Unless you are from English speaking Canada, that exclamation makes no sense. The local slang for Victoria Day is actually double-entendre, a “Two-Four” referring to a 24 case beer and the fact that in 1834, parliament of the Province of Canada to officially recognize 24 May as the Queen’s birthday.

Naturally, this weekend shed it’s Royalist naming in Quebec, morphing into “National Patriots’ Day” from Fête de Dollard, as in Adam Dollard des Ormeaux.

Long weekend spent in T.O. :

Resting, recuperating, putting frakin’ servers into Production. Played some WoWcrack, enjoyed some silly and mindless fun. Went to see Trek again, in IMAX this time. Slept.

Then on holiday Monday, I pushed my bike’s pedals for 4 1/2 hours. This morning, my legs were like steel girders. Oh well, it doesn’t start easy.

The plan is to bike to work tomorrow…
