Send in the Strippers!
Posted by barista in BoobTube, Interweeb! on 04/30/2009
Nothing like the word “Stripper” in a Reuters article title to make you do a double-take. Ok, maybe not you, but certainly worked on me… and many others judging from the articles #1 spot on the Reuter’ home page. Heck, it dropped spots due to the Flu Pandemic scare, and then re-emerged at the top again. Strippers are powerful!
The article, titled : “Fear a high school reunion? Hire a stripper” is wonderful little tale the you can guess at, but the cheeky idea has also a great technical tour-de-force to go with it.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Comedy writer Andrea Wachner hated the idea of going to her 10-year high school reunion so much that she hired a stripper to go instead, and what followed, she says, was a comical study in human nature.
I have to give her a nod of approval, that is one sneeky and smart way to get back at the High School you may have hated. Since she’ll have very little chance of showing the 40 min documentary, it’s a great pleasure to be able to get at least a small YouTube peek:
Phase 5
Posted by barista in Interweeb! on 04/30/2009
Welcome to World Health Organization’s Phase 5.
Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.
If your company has a Pandemic Incident section to their Disaster Recovery Process, it’s perhaps time to practice it.
Route 666
When I have a chance, I grab a beer off the LCBO shelf that I have not yet tried. More often then not, it’s not worth mentioning.
Devil’s Pale Ale is worth speaking of.
The marketing lingo is dead on:
The wonderful hoppy aroma is revealed even before your first sip, followed by a hearty malty body, and culminating with a pronounced bitterness.
I would sum up the taste as a “Jr” Indian Pale Ale, perhaps only “Jr” in the context of the imprint left in my memory from the Pike Street Brewery’s IPA.
Black Sheep
Denier says I must speak of my recent viewing of “Black Sheep”, the entertaining New Zealand “Zombie” movie featuring, what else but: sheep.
On Denier’s scale, where “Shaun of the Dead” is a 10, “Fido” a 9 approaching 10, “Black Sheep” gets a solid 8.
I think it’s more 6-ish, but I did giggle in between groans and bouts of “WTF?”
Influenza Primer and now the Pandemic Phase 4 Warning

ArsTechnica gives you the basics to understand how influenza works.
UPDATE: Ars also published the WHO’s viral pandemic information, including a link to a chart about the current “Phase 4″.
Zero Hero ?

EndGadget is doing a hands-on review of the Zero S electric motorcycle.
10,000$ for 70+ MPG and no oil changes still have a hard time against the low-cost, good overall fuel economy 250cc category bikes for thousands less.
The real question is: Would you pay for a quieter bike that is also good for the environment ?
I would rather choose a Kawasaki Super Sherpa or a Honda CBR125. Especially Honda’s “Go Combo”
2009 Swine Flu Outbreak

I was headed to Wikipedia this morning, and stumbled on news I had not heard much in terms of updates of late, easy to understand when you factor in my reluctance to read “online news” and watch TV.
This new human-to-human transmittable influenza has 45 laboratory confirmed cases, yet the possibility in Mexico of over 1600 cases exists. The World Health Organization (WHO) determined on April 25th that the situation is a “public health emergency of international concern”.
The Weekend Report – Apr 25-26
Posted by barista in BoobTube, The Weekend Report on 04/27/2009
What is there to report, besides being no longer sleep deprived ? Ah yes, the weekend … time to bike ? No, afraid not.
Saturday was a right off, sleep and attendant drowsiness keeping me indoors. Used the opportunity to catch-up on my PVRs contents, watching episodes of The Mentalist, Doll House and finally taking the time to see the season finale of Burn Notice. These shows all remind me a bit of the mood of Moonlighting, Remington Steele and such. Not very serious. Almost pure “brain candy”.
Sunday I went condo hunting. Yes, it’s time to begin the big game hunt: find a nice place to live.
I heard of an open-house in “Davisville”, and so began there. I knew a little the area due to my bike hunt, a nearby store being a Trek dealer. I had spotted a non-chain coffee shop with nice pastries and croissant …
315K$ buys you just shy of 650 square feet, underground parking spot, all appliances including in-suite washer/dryer. The layout was nice, but space was obviously at a super premium. The building, built in 2007, is a double tower with common amenities, security guard, doorman, sauna, pool. Basically, things I have never needed but wouldn’t scoff at. I must see more places to form a more educated opinion.
Bits that are nice in the vicinity: Kung Fu school, veterinarian, and parks.
Glorious Sleep!
Posted by barista in Me myself and I on 04/25/2009
Sometimes struggling against sleepiness is counter productive. Yesterday sometime after 19:00 I simply decided to lie down and give myself a break, perhaps re-awakening later in the evening.
Later turned out to be 10:00 this morning. O glorious sleep! I’m not even hungry…
